Four Tips to Make Writing Work For You

Tips_and_Tricks

Following are some ideas to make you a more effective writer.

Imagination — Are you writing in order to bore your readers to sleep? If not, use your imagination, whether you’re writing fiction or non-fiction. Writing the same old stuff in the same old way isn’t likely to invite readers, or entice them to stay. Present new ideas, or present old concepts or stories in new and original ways (e.g., use graphics to replace lots of text). Putting in your own twist will go a long way toward keeping your audience riveted.

Time — Finding time to write is challenging, especially for people who don’t write full time, or for those making a living another way. The solution is to write whenever you can. Even if it’s just five minutes to jot down some ideas. On the other hand, it’s a good idea to try to write at a pre-selected day and time (e.g., get up earlier than normal, or stay up later).

Format — Lots of people think they want (or need) to write a book. But a book is only one way to share information. Some writers have figured out that they’re not cut out to be book authors, and have turned their writing into pamphlets or papers or articles. There are many channels for presenting stories and information. If writing a book doesn’t seem to work, think of another format.

Joy — This may be the most important tip. Writing should be fun — it should not be a chore (even if you’ve scheduled yourself to write at specific times). If it feels like a “have to”, then writing may not be for you. Writing should be something to look forward to — because you’ve got something to say, and you want readers to know it.
